Modern Foreign Languages – Spanish (KS2 only)
At Welford, pupils learn Spanish over the four years of Key Stage 2 with the aim of laying solid foundations for further language study at Key Stage 3 and 4. Lessons include activities to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills including games, songs and stories. Intercultural understanding and knowledge about other languages is also woven into learning.
Pupils are encouraged to explore and discuss how languages work, considering how they can become more independent, for example, by making connections between words they already know to enable them to decode unfamiliar ones. Over the four years of study, learners should develop a good understanding on pronunciation and intonation, aided by a focus on Spanish phonics in Year 3 and reinforced cyclically over Years 4 to 6. Pupils also enjoy special focus lessons around major festivals in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries, and technology is used to facilitate rehearsal and recording of both speaking and writing.
